In 1986, Doug Gaudet, 10 years in the optical business, bought the small independent optical dispensary called Sackville Optical. It was in a run-down building on Sackville Drive in Lower Sackville. A year or so later, he moved operations to the Bedford Place Mall, and renamed it Gaudet Optical. After 15 years, he opened Underground Eyewear on Dresden Row in Halifax, while maintaining the mall location.
Underground Eyewear was radical, unorthodox, and completely unexpected in the direction it took the whole experience of eyeglass shopping. In 2002, Gaudet purchased the building at 6465 Quinpool Road, and combined everything into that one location.
Along with his hand-picked, highly trained opticians, he runs one of the most interesting, unusual, and awarded eyeglass dispensaries in Eastern Canada.
